Chapter 12 The Deception Is Set in MotionThe morning mist had barely dissipated over the port of Uzum when the first screams tore through the air. A shower of flaming arrows, launched from the large mercenary vessel, traced fiery arcs across the sky and crashed onto the roofs of the warehouses near the docks. The chaos was instantaneous. People ran in every direction, panic seizing the streets as the city bells began to toll with desperate urgency. From his chambers in the tallest tower, Abel watched the spectacle with a glacial smile. The false attack had begun, perfectly executed by his new, well-paid allies. He watched as his own soldiers, previously alerted, began to "defend" the city, engaging in choreographed skirmishes with the mercenaries in designated areas, creating the perfect illusion of a full-scale invasion. The members of the Council, roused from their beds by the din of battle, gathered for an emergency meeting in the great hall. Bewilderment and fear were etched on their faces. They couldn't understand how such a formidable force could have approached undetected. Abel burst into the hall, clad in armor with his sword drawn, his face a mask of feigned determination. "We are under attack! An unknown fleet has assaulted the port," he announced in a grave voice. "Our defenses are insufficient. The Council, with its deliberations and bureaucracy, is too slow to respond to a threat of this magnitude. A single, strong leader is needed to save Uzum!" Meanwhile, on the Isle of the Red Sleen, the news arrived not by messengers, but through the strange behavior of the sea. The currents, usually predictable, turned erratic, and black smoke, barely visible as a smudge on the distant horizon, confirmed Sasha's worst fears. Nu-Wanda, his experience forged in countless battles, narrowed his eyes toward the east. "That is no storm," he murmured to his daughter Marian, who had come to his side. "It is the smoke of a city in flames. It is Uzum." |
